A bifurcation study of the three-dimensional thermohaline ocean circulation: The double hemispheric case

چکیده
Within a low-resolution primitive-equation model of the three-dimensional ocean circulation, a bifurcation analysis is performed of double-hemispheric basin flows. Main focus is on the connection between results for steady two-dimensional flows in a nonrotating basin and those for threedimensional flows in a rotating basin. With the use of continuation methods, branches of steady states are followed in parameter space and their linear stability is monitored. There is a close qualitative similarity between the bifurcation structure of steady-state solutions of the twoand three dimensional flows. In both cases, symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcations are central in generating a multiple equilibria structure. The locations of these pitchfork bifurcations in parameter space can be characterized through a zero of the tendency of a particular energy functional. Although balances controlling the steady-state flows are quantitatively very different, the zonally averaged patterns of the perturbations associated with symmetry-breaking are remarkably similar for two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows, and the energetics of the symmetry-breaking mechanism is in essence the same.

Low-frequency Variability of the Large-scale Ocean Circulation: a Dynamical Systems Approach
Oceanic variability on interannual, interdecadal and longer time scales plays a key role in climate variability and climate change. Paleoclimatic records suggest major changes in the location and rate of deep-water formation in the Atlantic and Southern Ocean on time scales from millennia to millions of years. Instrumental records of increasing duration and spatial coverage document substantial...
متن کاملAbrupt Climate Change and Multistability of the Thermohaline Circulation
Ice core records suggest that the Earth’s climate has undergone rapid, catastrophic shifts on multiple occasions in geologically recent times. The multiplicity of steady states found in fluid convection models has led many to speculate that the changes may have been caused by transitions between different stable modes of ocean current patterns. This paper reviews analytical and numerical modeli...
متن کاملA tailored solver for bifurcation analysis of ocean-climate models
In this paper, we present a new linear system solver for use in a fully-implicit ocean model. The new solver allows to perform bifurcation analysis of relatively high-resolution primitive-equation ocean-climate models. It is based on a blockILU approach and takes special advantage of the mathematical structure of the governing equations. In implicit models Jacobian matrices have to be construct...
متن کاملDecadal Variability in Coupled Sea-Ice–Thermohaline Circulation Systems*
An interdecadal oscillation in a coupled ocean–ice system was identified in a previous study. This paper extends that study to further examine the stability of the oscillation and the sensitivity of its frequency to various parameters and forcing fields. Three models are used: (i) an analytical box model; (ii) a two-dimensional model for the ocean thermohaline circulation (THC) coupled to a the...
متن کاملOn the freshwater forcing and transport of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation
The ‘conveyor belt’ circulation of the Atlantic Ocean transports large amounts of heat northward, acting as a heating system for the northern North Atlantic region. It is widely thought that this circulation is driven by atmospheric freshwater export from the Atlantic catchment region, and that it transports freshwater northward to balance the loss to the atmosphere. Using results from a simple...
